Jennersville Regional Hospital to Host Screening Program

In conjunction with the Chester County Department of Health, Jennersville Regional Hospital will offer a screening program open to the community on Tuesday, October 27, 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Hospital’s Employee Memorial Learning Center, located at 1015 West Baltimore Pike, West Grove.

The program, offered as part of a Diabetes Expo, provides at no cost anemia, blood sugar and blood pressure screenings by appointment and information on the benefits of healthy eating and regular physical activity. (It is recommended that individuals fast 1-2 hours prior to the blood sugar screening.)

The screenings help individuals learn more about their risk for cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and anemia since many are unaware of the warning signs or as in the case with diabetes, many go undiagnosed with the disease for long periods of time, often causing other related health concerns.   The American Diabetes Association estimates that 14.6 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, but unfortunately, 6.2 million people (or nearly one-third) are unaware that they have the disease.  Mild anemia causes few or no symptoms and high blood pressure is often called "the silent killer" because it too usually has no symptoms.  Some people only find out they have it when they have trouble with their heart, brain, or kidneys.

High blood pressure is the most important risk factor for stroke and is a major risk factor for heart and kidney disease and congestive heart failure.

In addition to the free screenings, participants interested in an optional Total and HDL cholesterol screening may do so for $15 per person.  No fasting is required.  This screening measures the total amount of cholesterol along with the “good” cholesterol found in a person’s blood.  High cholesterol levels increase a person's risk for arteriosclerosis that is, narrowing of the arteries, coronary heart disease, and early death from heart disease, heart attack and stroke.  All results are provided at the time of the screening.
